We are back from New York after visiting the 2014 International Toy Fair. It was a great time with some awesome news! We got to see new items coming out from Neca, DC Collectibles, Diamond Select, Kotobukiya, Funko, Enterbay, & many others. Today we will highlight our two favorite manufacturers Kotobukiya and Funko.
Our favorite part every year is visiting our friends at Kotobukiya. They always have a great display filled with statues both out in the market today as well as all the fun new statues that have yet to come out. We got to see some of the cool pre orders that will be arriving in the coming months like the ArtFX+ Hulk and Nightwing or the Bishoujo Mara Jade and Spider-Woman. I personally loved seeing the Fine Art Juggernaut in person. It is massive! We also got to preview some of the items that were announced at the show like the ArtFX+ Star Wars 2pks with Chewy/Han Solo and Luke/Leia from A New Hope. There is a new Halo 4 ArtFX statue on the way and we got our first glimpse of the Iron Man prototype from the Marvel Now ArtFX+ line. Always expanding their lines with new characters like Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy keeps their products fresh and relevant. Their attention to detail in the sculpt as well as the finished product is second to none. Can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
Another favorite stop of ours is of course Funko. Each year Funko has a large elaborate set up. This year was no different with showcases of POP!s, wobblers, ReAction figures, and Legacy figures. This year Funko will be getting into the action figure arena with a widespread release of their vintage style ReAction figure line and the super detailed Legacy figure line. There will be some great licenses for these figures including Predator, Alien, Goonies, Back to the Future, & Pulp Fiction for the ReAction line. The Legacy line will be getting some winners too with Game of Thrones, Magic the Gathering, & The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Of course the POP! line will be growing this year with the announcement of True Blood, Ghostbusters, Magic the Gathering, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer just to name a few.
The second day of the Toy Fair you may have noticed a special announcement on our Facebook page. We have begun a new endeavor called The POP! Shop. Make sure to check out our new website and Facebook page for more information about this new idea. The POP! Shop is an automated retail system that will deliver nothing but Funko POP!s. We will be placing these cool machines in malls and airports. The initial placement will be in central Florida with plans to expand to other parts of the country as well.
We will have another blog out soon to talk about some of the other cool manufacturers we got to spend time with in New York. Check out pictures from our trip on our Facebook page and let us know what you think about the new JMD Amy out on the town POP! pictures.
It’s been a little while since we have posted any new blogs. After a very busy holiday season we are back on the blog to bring you updates and opinions on all kinds of new toys, figures, & statues. With the new year comes new toy announcements. Also, we are working on a new project that promises to be exciting for some of our favorite toy collectors.
We are only a couple of weeks away from the 2014 Toy Fair International in New York. It will be a fun time with lots of pictures and new announcements as manufacturers dazzle us with this year’s releases. Stay tuned as we take you through our trip to New York to see companies like Kotobukiya, Funko, Dark Horse, etc.
In the coming months we will be releasing more information on a new project that should excite some of our favorite funatic collectors. Hints will be dropped here and there but when the announcement is official you will find a Facebook page and website dedicated to this new idea. Any guesses?
We are always trying to find new products and new ideas to share with you. This year looks like it will be our biggest yet and we are excited to take you on the journey with us.
Last week the world received another visit from Thor. In his second movie Thor was as entertaining as ever. Like all great superhero movies that have come before it Thor 2 offers us some great toys as well. With small figures, bobbleheads, vinyl figures, and high end super detailed figures the display options seem limitless.
Marvel Select again enters the Thor arena with the release of the Thor figure and a Jane Foster figure set to release later in the year too. Sporting a new sculpt specifically for the new movie this figure will add to your collection without being a repeat of an old character in a new package. The Jane Foster figure is an interesting addition to the Marvel Select line. Usually these figures are for heroes and villains alike but not usually used to showcase the love interest or non super powered companions.
Another favorite of ours does not disappoint. With Funko releasing POP!s and Wobblers from the movie we are very excited to have Loki toys back in the fold. With Thor, Loki, and the Dark Elves available in POP! form you can set up endless battles with the armies of the Dark World. The Wacky Wobblers of Thor and Loki make a nice addition to any desk wanting the protection of Mjolnir.
Of course what Marvel movie could be complete without a collectibles 1/6th scale figure from Hot Toys. With two different versions slated for the God of Thunder there is also talk of another Loki figure headed our way. Hot Toys always lives up to expectations with their expertly detailed figures.
What is your favorite Thor 2 toy?
The season premiere of The Walking Dead has come and gone and it was fantastic. I’m so pleased with the progress the show makes each year. The success of the show brings even more figures and collectibles our way. What could be more pleasing than that? Rick and the gang are getting quite the treatment with action figures, plushes, vinyl figures, statues, busts, key chains and more.
Mcfarlane Toys pioneered the Walking Dead toy craze with some great comic and TV figures. They started out great with a limited run of popular characters and even offered some chase variants. As the show has continued the Mcfarlane figures keep getting better and better. The articulation of the sculpts has grown leaps and bounds as well as the depth of the character roster. We have most of the main characters and the most memorable zombies ready to face the apocalypse.
Funko brings us some other great Walking Dead fun with their POP! and plushie lines. The POP! line gives us some great zombies and characters. With the regular releases, retailer and convention exclusives there are a lot of great options. But nothing is better for a cuddle than the Poncho Daryl plushie. He will keep you safe from walkers even while you sleep.
The most lacking area for The Walking Dead goodies is the statues and busts. Gentle Giant aims to repair that problem with a nice line of TV related items. The Rick Grimes bust recently released and a SDCC exclusive Michonne bust was a big hit as well. With talk of 12″ statues heading our way we are ready for the undead apocalypse.
What types of Walking Dead merchandise do you want to see get made? (Mine is a zombie Milton figure from Season 3!!)
We love Funko around here. Their POP! vinyl figures have always been a lot of fun but lately they have been bringing some really great things out. Every time I look at some of the in stock and up and coming products I can’t help but think of my childhood. He Man, Back to the Future, TMNT, Power Rangers, and now the announcement of The Goonies! Could there be anything more exciting?
The best part of the Funko POP! line is the diversity of the licensing. They have so many genres options from comic books, movies, tv shows, and Disney just to name a few. In some cases it’s the only time you can expect to see a product from these licenses made. Take The Goonies for example. It’s not the ’80s anymore so expectations for stumbling across a Chunk figure are pretty low until now.
The possibilities seem endless. I can’t wait to see what they will announce next. I did hear a rumor that Thundercats are on the table for 2014. My childhood just keeps coming back around! What POP!s do you want to see get made?
This year we had a first for JMD Retail. We got our very first exclusive. It is a JMD Retail exclusive Big Bang Theory POP Amy Farrah Fowler. As much as I love coming across different exclusives I can’t help but wonder which is more exciting, exclusives or chase variants?
Funko has a wide variety of exclusives out there but also a wide variety of chases as well. As a retailer when I open a case of Batman POPs all I can think about is whether or not I will come across a metallic chase. When I find a new store with a good Funko selection I start searching for variants. For me I love the creativity and uniqueness of exclusives but nothing compares to the thrill of the hunt for the chase variants. Which are your favorites?
We are excited to be a part of Fanboy Expo Tampa this weekend! It’s always fun to be around such a cool group of people at the cons, and meeting the guests is always a highlight, too!
Fanboy Expo originally was scheduled to have Adam West and Burt Ward attending. Holy Bullseye! The original Batman and Robin in Tampa? We were definitely excited for this. Unfortunately both of these guests were postponed until next year’s Fanboy Expo.
Not to worry though! There are going to be great guests all weekend! Chandler Riggs – who plays Carl Grimes on The Walking Dead, Billy Dee Williams – Lando Calrissian from Star Wars Episode V, Elvira, Jerry The King Lawler and more. Check the Fanboy website for specific details on times for each guest.
For our booth, we always try to step it up a little each time. We will have a few more display cases, and many more Funko POP figures. Of course, you’ll always find the latest from Kotobukiya, DC Collectibles, Funko, and other quality manufacturers. Stop by, say hello, and make sure to enter our Fanboy Expo drawing! Here are the details:

We are back for another look at the toys and collectibles inspired by the release of Man of Steel. I for one can’t wait for the movie. Superman movies have had a bit of a troubled past. Superman 4 or Superman Returns comes to mind. This new film looks stunning and the toys and collectibles look just as good.
First up is the ArtFX Man of Steel statue by Kotobukiya. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I love Kotobukiya. They do a great job bringing every piece they make to life. This statue not only looks great in it’s sculpt but it also has some unusual features as well. The cape is moveable. You can adjust the cape in nearly any configuration that you would like. That’s definitely awesome, a statue you can basically play with!!
Next is the Funko Man of Steel Wacky Wobblers and POP!s. These are some fun items to use at work on your desk or at home to display proudly next to your other collectibles. The POP!s are vinyl comic like versions of the characters while the Wacky Wobblers are essentially bobble heads of the characters from the film. Either way it is an inexpensive, fun way to celebrate the awesomeness of Man of Steel.
Where would our superhero movies be without action figures. This movie has a wide variety from the not very detailed to the intricately detailed. My favorite figures from the movie are definitely the Play Art Kai figures by Square Enix. They are 10″ tall and super detailed. They can take on any pose so they are good for those of us kids at heart who want to play with them or for the serious collector looking to decorate their fortress of solitude.
Finally, today we will look at some other statues. These are made by DC Collectibles. There are a few to choose from with Zod, Faora, Superman, Jor El, and Superman vs Zod available. These statues are great! For the most part they are a 1/6 scale and have poseable capes just like the Kotobukiya version. My favorite though is a 1/12 scale statue depicting Superman fighting Zod. The pictures of this statue were under wraps until a couple of weeks ago. I for one think it was worth the wait to get a look at it. It does a great job of capturing my imagination at what the movie will be like.
In the end all I can say is that toys are fun! If you aren’t in to collecting them or don’t have kids to let play with them, you can at least admit that toys are a fun thing to look at from time to time. See you at the movies!!
We have been excited with the number of high-quality collectibles that are hitting the market for fans of the Mass Effect trilogy. The most recent arrival is the Commander Shepard bishoujo statue from Kotobukiya. She joins the previously released Liara T’Soni in the bishoujo line. Square Enix has also released Play Arts Kai Commander Shepard and Tali Zora Vas figures. If you haven’t seen the Play Arts Kai figures, they are really high quality, and highly detailed figures from popular video games like Mass Effect, Batman Arkham City, Halo, etc.
One of the more unique collectibles is the line of Mass Effect ship replicas from Dark Horse. Most of these are 5″-7″ long depending on the ship. However, Dark Horse is coming out with an 18″ Normandy replica and an 18.5″ Sovereign Reaper ship! We were able to see both of these at Toy Fair, and they were truly impressive.
In addition to the larger ships, Kotobukiya will be releasing a male version of Commander Shepard in the ArtFX line. This should be available around July 2013. There will be several interchangeable parts so you can display the statue several different ways. Funko will also be releasing a line of Mass Effect POP figures in September. We have seen some concept art for them, but the actual production images have not been shown yet. We are excited to see how those will turn out.
What is your favorite Mass Effect collectible?
So we are very excited for the JMD Retail Exclusive Amy Farrah Fowler POP variant! We’ve gotten the stock photo, samples are on their way, and the full shipment will be leaving Funko on Monday. The Big Bang Theory figures from Funko are such cool collectibles. There are already several Sheldon POPs, and now there is the regular Amy Farrah Fowler and our exclusive to add in. After Amy is Leonard followed later down the road by the rest of the group. We are excited to share this with you guys! We hope that you enjoy it!
