How many times have you thought to yourself I would love some really cool original art of my favorite super heroes, villains, TV shows, or movies? Well we have your solution! Meet A Design Geek! We met Nick and Meli of A Design Geek at the Tampa Bay Comic Con last April and we have always been very impressed with their work.
I am always happy to say we have several of their posters. They are always so cool! Nick, implements a minimalist design style that brings out the very essence of each character. His work is both subtle and direct as all my favorite characters become the perfect piece to hang on the wall.
In addition to posters they also have vinyl products from wall clings to license plate tags. They have even done some custom work for us in the past. Their great designs made for the perfect backdrop for our event photo booth as well as shirts for the best way for our employees to stand out at shows.
If you haven’t seen A Design Geek’s work then check them out on their website or at the shows they exhibit at. You won’t be disappointed!
When we were at Toy Fair, we came across these Mimobot USB Flash drives, and we really thought they were a cool idea. You need to share some pictures or a document from a flash drive?Just pull out your Dark Knight Rises Batman USB drive, and you can share your document and start an interesting conversation about your favorite character. We went with the 8GB size for our first order featuring the Dark Knight Rises Batman, Catwoman, Robin, Darth Vader, Darth Maul, R2D2, Stormtrooper, Einstein, and Adventure Time Finn! Two interesting variations happen with Darth Vader and Stormtrooper.
Remove Darth Vader’s helmet to see which version you received! There is a 1 in 6 chance that you will receive the Return of the Jedi version with the pale, scarred face of Darth Vader. For the Stormtrooper, you remove the helmet, and find out if you have Luke Skywalker or Han Solo under the helmet. There is a 50/50 chance between each one.
Another cool item that we received is along the same lines, but it is a Chewbacca microSD card reader. This is in the upper right of the first picture. You can also see better pictures on our site. The card reader comes with a keychain, flip-out USB port and an LED indicator.
We hope that you all like these items as much as we do. We’re hoping to carry more of these in the future, and we do have a few others up for pre-order on our site. These are great gifts for the Star Wars and DC fans that you know!
This is the drawing that Kotobukiya used in their brochure at Toy Fair 2013 for the newly announced “Avengers Assemble” ArtFX+ line that will be released in early 2014. We had planned to ask Kotobukiya specifically about a Marvel or Avengers ArtFX+ line, so we were really excited to see this being promoted already. The Justice League ArtFX+ statues have been a huge success, and we were hoping to see some of our Marvel favorites in this scale. We have not seen any prototypes or anything, so the drawing is all that we have to go by, but here is how the drawing translated to production for the DC Justice League statues.
The DC statues came out very close to the original concept. So with that, what do you think the final outcome of the Avengers Assemble will be? Are you excited about this series? Which character are you looking forward to the most in the 1/10 scale? I know I’m excited to see what Hulk looks like in scale with the rest of the Avengers!
Last week the much anticipated DC Huntress bishoujo and Jaina Solo bishoujo statues arrived. We have been looking forward to Jaina Solo since we saw the drawings at Toy Fair last year. She is a little different than most of the other bishoujo statues-like the ArtFX line- there are a few pieces that have to be assembled to properly display the statue. You must connect her torso, legs, gloves and accessories. I really like the pose and accessories on this statue. You can really picture her getting ready or coming back from a flight. It will be interesting to see if Kotobukiya does anything else with the Star Wars expanded universe, especially with the 7th movie on the horizon.
The DC Huntress bishoujo is another one that we’ve been looking forward to for quite some time. I enjoy most of the Batman related statues, so it was cool to see what Kotobukiya did with Huntress. Her flowing hair and cape add a nice touch to the statue. The mask, dark colors, and gargoyle add a mysterious feel to the statue that is kind of unique compared to most other bishoujo statues.
So what do you think of these statues? If you collect bishoujo statues, will you be adding these to your collection, and what is your favorite piece in your collection?
I have been a fan of Bane since the famed cover, Batman #497, that showed him breaking the Batman’s back. I have always wanted some kind of collectible that represented that. Well we finally have something to remind us of that iconic cover. In honor of The Dark Knight Rises, DC Collectibles has created a massive 1/6th scale statue showing off that scene from the movie. What has been your favorite collectible from The Dark Knight Rises so far? What other classic scenes would you like to see a collectible for?
We have been working with a lot more CGC graded books recently. I know we had a previous post that gave some of the basics of CGC grading, so make sure to check it out if you missed it. We had gotten probably 50 or so comics graded in the past, and they were mainly in the 9.4 to 9.6 range with a few 9.8, but these were primarily older comics that had some age to them…
We had been happy with our prior results, and had submitted more for grading, but we were starting to wonder what it took to get a 9.9 or a 10. Waiting for the results is always interesting, as you wonder if you saw everything about the book before you submitted it. What grade will we get? Was there a small crease or spot that we somehow overlooked? When we got the results of our last submissions, we were thrilled to find out that we had finally gotten a 9.9! So now that we have gotten that, maybe we can get a 10 one of these days. In the meantime, hopefully we’ll get more 9.9s to share with other collectors out there.
The new arrivals from this latest batch include all covers for The Walking Dead #100, Thief of Thieves #6, Revival #1, and many more! We’d love to hear your thoughts on these graded comics or your own CGC story!
So the second and third figures from the Justice League New 52 series are starting to hit shelves. The first figure in the series, Batman, was fairly popular, and was difficult to find when it was first released in our area. After several delays, JMD Retail just got the Aquaman and Green Lantern action figures in stock. We have seen several Green Lantern figures recently with the movie figures and everything, but we do like this figure and the Justice League packaging that it comes in, compared to some of the Green Lantern carded figures that were released. This is the first Aquaman figure that we’ve gotten in a while, and it is worth the wait. This figure has nice detail, especially if you like the New 52 aquaman styling. We are happy to see what DC has done with this line so far. We are looking forward to the rest of the line, and then we are excited to compare these figures with the ArtFX statues that Kotobukiya will be releasing. It’s an exciting time to be a DC fan.
Bane is one of the characters that always seems to be popular with collectors. From the Knightfall Bane figure all the way to the recent Arkham Asylum release, each figure seems to be difficult to find and very pricey if you are lucky enough to locate one. However, with Bane being part of the Dark Knight Rises movie, we are seeing more Bane collectibles hitting the market. One of the more unique ones that we are really looking forward to is the Bane statue inspired by Kelley Jones that is part of the Batman Black and White series. This statue is a little bigger than most statues in this series at 8.75″H x 7″W x 5″D. Bane is currently available to pre-order through JMD Retail, and it is expected to arrive in October 2012.
