We are excited to be a part of Fanboy Expo Tampa this weekend! It’s always fun to be around such a cool group of people at the cons, and meeting the guests is always a highlight, too!
Fanboy Expo originally was scheduled to have Adam West and Burt Ward attending. Holy Bullseye! The original Batman and Robin in Tampa? We were definitely excited for this. Unfortunately both of these guests were postponed until next year’s Fanboy Expo.
Not to worry though! There are going to be great guests all weekend! Chandler Riggs – who plays Carl Grimes on The Walking Dead, Billy Dee Williams – Lando Calrissian from Star Wars Episode V, Elvira, Jerry The King Lawler and more. Check the Fanboy website for specific details on times for each guest.
For our booth, we always try to step it up a little each time. We will have a few more display cases, and many more Funko POP figures. Of course, you’ll always find the latest from Kotobukiya, DC Collectibles, Funko, and other quality manufacturers. Stop by, say hello, and make sure to enter our Fanboy Expo drawing! Here are the details:

Wow things have been busy around here lately! Can you believe that we are a little over a week away from SDCC. Are you ready? Unfortunately, we won’t be attending this year, but we look forward to all of the exciting news to come!
For JMD Retail, this is our first summer showing at cons, and it has been so much fun! (Check out our photos on our Facebook page.) If you’re in Central FL, you may have seen us at Tampa Bay Comic Con, Orlando Comic Expo, Orlando Toy and Comic Con, or Ocala Comic Con! We have met a lot of cool people, and really enjoyed the whole thing so far. Some people have asked where else we will be. In August, you can find us at Fanboy Expo and Tampa Bay Comic Con again! Tampa was crazy for the spring show (see our previous post about the mayhem, if you missed it) and it should be even better this time with the new venue and great guest list.
What is the best con that you’ve attended? What makes for a memorable con experience? Do you have a crazy con story? We’d love to hear about it!
We are getting ready for an exciting weekend at Orlando Comic Expo! This con features Drake Bell from Ultimate Spider-Man as well as a number of artists: Dennis Calero, Paul Gulacy, Bob Hall. Saturday aslo includes a few other artists: Rob Hunter, Alex Maleev, Cary Nord, Keith Pollard, and Rodney Ramos. Also, one of the more unique events is a pool party featuring Drake Bell in concert and a live DJ along with the costume contest. I’m really intrigued by this event, and I’m excited to see how it goes over.
We are excited to see the cosplayers, the trivia, the panels, and the overall excitement for comics! We will be bringing plenty of action figures, statues, bobbleheads, and other great collectibles. Make sure to stop by and say hello! If you aren’t able to make it, you can always check out our site at http://www.jmdretail.com
This past weekend, we had the pleasure of being an exhibitor at Tampa Bay Comic Con. Wow, what a weekend! We didn’t quite know what to expect at this show. We had attended a few times in the past, but this weekend definitely had some bigger guests with Lauren Cohan and Emily Kinney from The Walking Dead. Add in Drake Bell, many artists, and costume contests, and we knew this would be quite an event.
We had 3 booths for this event, and it took quite a while to set up on Friday night and Saturday morning. All the hard work paid off, though. We were really happy with how our booth turned out, and we got a lot of compliments on the layout that we used. Lauren Cohan wasn’t able to attend on Saturday, but the crowd was still packed. We really enjoyed the costumes-especially the young kid – probably 3 yrs old – dressed as Hulk, including body paint! Overall we were kind of surprised by how busy it was judging from the last few we had attended. We met a lot of cool people- It was a great day, and we were looking forward to what Sunday would hold.
Sunday is usually a slower day, but no one really knew what to expect with Lauren Cohan only being there for Sunday. We arrived at about 9 to restock some things in our booth, and there was already a good sized line. Someone came through our booth at about 1030, and told us that the line was out of the lobby, around the building and out into the parking garage! At some point, they cut off ticket sales and wouldn’t let anyone else into the convention! The rest of the day involved a lot of updates regarding lines, fire marshal threats, hearing of people buying wrist bands on the black market, and all kinds of stuff that I wish I could see firsthand. While all that was going on, we were trying to hold down the fort at the booth. It was so busy, which made the day go by fast but we barely got even a lunch break! We met a lot of people again Sunday, and also, it seems like everyone we knew stopped by to visit Sunday- even with all the Mayhem. It was nice to meet up with Nathan from http://geektriumvirate.com/, Nick from http://adesigngeek.com/, and all the guys from http://www.readmorecomics.com/. Also, we ran into Shawn, an old friend from years ago, who is now doing http://www.comicconartists.net/. If you get a chance, check these guys out – they are all really great people, who are passionate about comics. With 2013 here, what are you looking forward to for the next 12 months? Here at JMD Retail, we have a few events that we are excited about, as well as some highly anticipated product releases.
First is Toy Fair 2013 in NYC. It is coming up fast in February. We got to attend the Toy Fair last year, and now that we know what to expect, we are hoping ’13 is even better. We will try to share as many pics as we can of the newly announced products. We are also hoping to find some new manufacturers to add to our product line.
In April, JMD Retail will be participating in our first Comic Con here in Tampa. If you are in the area, stop in and say Hello. This is the first weekend in April, and we are excited to meet some fellow collectors. We’ve been planning our layout and trying to determine how many products to bring with us. It will be a good learning experience for future conventions, and a lot of fun all at the same time.
Product wise, I think the Justice League New 52 ArtFX+ statue line from Kotobukiya is what we are most looking forward to. These have proven to be very popular so far based primarily on the pics online. We are looking forward to getting to see them in person, as I bet they will look even better than the pics.
Add in the Superman Man of Steel and Iron Man 3, and 2013 should be a pretty good year. What are you looking forward to the most for 2013?
So NYCC came to a close a few days ago. I don’t know about you all, but my twitter feed got overloaded with news from NYCC, whether it was manufacturer news, cosplay pictures, artist interviews, etc., there was always something to keep up with. The things that stood out to me for JMD Retail were some of the announcements from two of our favorite manufacturers – Kotobukiya and DC Collectibles.
Kotobukiya revealed the Aquaman Justice League New52 statue. This is the fourth statue from the Justice League series, which is proving to be very popular so far. Also, Mass Effect also got some attention with the new ArtFX Commander Shepard statue. Probably the piece that I’m most excited about is the Killing Joke Joker ArtFX statue. Maybe I’m just a sucker for the Joker statues, but the color and pose on this one look like it will be pretty impressive. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this one in person!
DC Collectibles announced the next line of the Arkham City figures, which will include a new Batman, Talia Al Ghul, and Nightwing. Also, the DC Comics Bombshells statues line of female heroes was announced. The most exciting news from DC in my opinion is the Superman statue line. This series is going to features statues from respected artists, similar to the Batman Black and White statue. The first few statues were revealed, and I am excited to see where DC goes with this series, as there are so many possibilities.
What did you think of these pieces? What news caught your attention from NYCC?
So with SDCC 2012 coming to an end, what did you find to be the most exciting? I know I caught some coverage on SpikeTV. I saw a short interview with Jim Lee that I found to be interesting. It looked like there was a lot of excitement at the event–I still wish I could have made it. Of all the news that came out, though, I think I am most interested in the New 52 ArtFX statues by Kotobukiya. Assuming that I like the pose, I tend to like statues a little more than the action figures, and the Superman and Green Lantern ArtFX were really neat. I’ve been happy with most of the Kotobukiya pieces that we’ve gotten recently, and I’m really looking forward to where they go with this new DC line. What news did you find most interesting this year, and what new figures/statues are you looking forward to?
So with San Diego Comic Con 2012 starting, it makes me realize how much I need to make it out to SDCC one of these years. I’ve been to local comic cons, traveled to national music festivals, and even got to go to the New York Toy Fair. Somehow I’ve never gotten a trip to San Diego coordinated during SDCC. I can imagine seeing all the diehard fans, costumes, comic companies, and the special guests–not to mention the exclusive action figures and statues… This is a place that I’ve got to make it to next year. SDCC ’13 look out. Do you have any good SDCC stories? We’d love to hear them!
