We are getting ready for an exciting weekend at Orlando Comic Expo! This con features Drake Bell from Ultimate Spider-Man as well as a number of artists: Dennis Calero, Paul Gulacy, Bob Hall. Saturday aslo includes a few other artists: Rob Hunter, Alex Maleev, Cary Nord, Keith Pollard, and Rodney Ramos. Also, one of the more unique events is a pool party featuring Drake Bell in concert and a live DJ along with the costume contest. I’m really intrigued by this event, and I’m excited to see how it goes over.
We are excited to see the cosplayers, the trivia, the panels, and the overall excitement for comics! We will be bringing plenty of action figures, statues, bobbleheads, and other great collectibles. Make sure to stop by and say hello! If you aren’t able to make it, you can always check out our site at http://www.jmdretail.com
Happy Star Wars and Free Comic Book day from all of us here at JMD Retail! Having the two days together makes it that much more epic. We took some time to head down to see some friends at Read More Comics in Brandon. They have such a nice set up, and run some great specials. If you are in town, make sure to check them out. While we were there we also got to hang out with one of the guys from the Geek Triumvirate as well. It was a great day so far, and now we will cap it off with some classic Star Wars! So how are you celebrating?
Check out this blog which includes a video on some of the visual effects from Marvel’s the Avengers.

We have been working with a lot more CGC graded books recently. I know we had a previous post that gave some of the basics of CGC grading, so make sure to check it out if you missed it. We had gotten probably 50 or so comics graded in the past, and they were mainly in the 9.4 to 9.6 range with a few 9.8, but these were primarily older comics that had some age to them…
We had been happy with our prior results, and had submitted more for grading, but we were starting to wonder what it took to get a 9.9 or a 10. Waiting for the results is always interesting, as you wonder if you saw everything about the book before you submitted it. What grade will we get? Was there a small crease or spot that we somehow overlooked? When we got the results of our last submissions, we were thrilled to find out that we had finally gotten a 9.9! So now that we have gotten that, maybe we can get a 10 one of these days. In the meantime, hopefully we’ll get more 9.9s to share with other collectors out there.
The new arrivals from this latest batch include all covers for The Walking Dead #100, Thief of Thieves #6, Revival #1, and many more! We’d love to hear your thoughts on these graded comics or your own CGC story!
So we have started to get some CGC comics back from being graded, and we have many more on their way. If you aren’t familiar with CGC, it is an independent company that professionally grades the condition of a comic from 0.5 to 10. The comics are reviewed by 1 pre-grader and 3 official graders to ensure that the book is thoroughly reviewed. The grades are based on many factors such as page quality, sharp corners, any bends or creases, etc. Once CGC assigns a grade, they encapsulate the comic in a sealed plastic case to ensure that it maintains its graded condition. If you collect these CGC graded comics or if you just want to check out what some of them look like, check out our CGC pages! We currently have several different Thief of Thieves, Walking Dead, and many more!

So with SDCC 2012 coming to an end, what did you find to be the most exciting? I know I caught some coverage on SpikeTV. I saw a short interview with Jim Lee that I found to be interesting. It looked like there was a lot of excitement at the event–I still wish I could have made it. Of all the news that came out, though, I think I am most interested in the New 52 ArtFX statues by Kotobukiya. Assuming that I like the pose, I tend to like statues a little more than the action figures, and the Superman and Green Lantern ArtFX were really neat. I’ve been happy with most of the Kotobukiya pieces that we’ve gotten recently, and I’m really looking forward to where they go with this new DC line. What news did you find most interesting this year, and what new figures/statues are you looking forward to?
With The Amazing Spiderman now out in theaters, we thought we’d take a moment to share this cool statue coming out later this fall. This is the Kotobukiya Spider-man Unleased statue. We got to see a pre-production version at the New York Toy Fair in February, and it was a really nice looking piece. The pose sculpted by Erick Sosa really captures the feel of Spiderman flying through the air, and the web-slinging out into the air really adds a nice touch. There is an upcoming statue of Venom that accompanies this piece, and we are excited to see the final result of these two pieces together. Check out this statue and other Spiderman items on our website.
